Wedding Reception Music – Band Vs DJ

buffet

There are two main types of entertainers available for your wedding reception. These include those offering some form of live entertainment, such as a band that plays either its own songs, covers of popular music or more classical offerings, and disc jockeys who should be able to play a fantastic mix of tunes that fit together in a way that gets the party started, keeps it going and then allows it to wind down towards the end of the night.

Both options can either be great and memorable or somewhat dire. Here are a few of the differences between the two that will hopefully aid you in making your final decision.

A band is often regarded as the more traditional choice for a wedding reception and as a consequence may be more popular among the older members of your guest list. This is particularly true of a band that limits their repertoire to older contemporary tunes or pieces that are considered to be of a classical genre. This is not always the case however and it is important to remember that a group of musicians who can pull songs from a library of both timeless classics and newer songs can be a hit at any wedding. This is especially true if they perform with a great deal of enthusiasm, and a lot will rest on the band leader to get your crowd going.

A DJ on the other is often regarded as a more hip and modern alternative to live performers. Again, a lot depends on the individual as a person who only plays older, less popular tunes will more often than not be less popular than one who plays the latest chart singles. With this option you can often be hit and miss and it is important to research any potential candidates well beforehand, ideally by seeing them do a DJ set live.

One benefit of a DJ is that he or she won’t need a rest after every few songs he plays as may be the case with musicians. As a result there won’t be any major breaks in your wedding reception unless you want them. A DJ will also often be less costly than musicians although this is not always the case and you may need to shop around to get the best person for your money. With this said there is a certain atmosphere that live music creates that cannot be replaced by someone playing recorded tracks. The option of musicians can really add a whole new level to your wedding reception and is ultimately something that you may want to look into.
